X. London Riots
"The current situation is London shows us that this is a global phenomenon (it is by no means the first outbreak of this type in the OECD). London is perhaps the most diverse of all global cities and probably has the greatest inequalities. What's really going on is alienation and lack of opportunity to go along with the rise of awareness of what is available to others. This is exactly the sort of thing that is bound to happen during the current "crucial phase" of globalization. Our institutions (of which we are so proud) have not developed in step with the way our society has been changing. The quality of society (general levels of awareness) has changed in ways that make it impossible to deal with disorder by simple force, either in London or Syria or Afghanistan."
Discussion between Brian Spooner and Frank Fortunato.
