Felipe Coronel, aka Immortal Technique, is an Afro-Peruvian rapper based in Harlem. He also considers himself an activist, and claims that he looks “at things much more in perspective as to how they relate to history”. As a descendant of indigenous Peruvians, one of his more common themes is injustice in South America. He sees globalization as a negative force, one that tends to weaken the power of the economically disadvantaged. In fact, his views are quite socialistic. Here is Immortal Technique on an interview with Al Jazeera: Here is his song “Peruvian Cocaine”. Every verse in the song represents a different actor in the drug trade, from Peruvian farmers to American policymakers who profit from manufacturing a political and economic disposition in Latin America that allows the trade to continue. Note: The song contains a limited amount of profanity. It may be best to listen with headphones.
